The New York Department of State, Division of Licensing Services assigns the scope of the curriculum and the educational requirements for estheticians to include the following subjects and the hours assigned to each. Dermalogica Academy also includes advanced content exclusively developed by The International Dermal Institute satisfying the state requirements and incorporating the latest techniques and innovations, business modules and life skills.

25 ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY AND NUTRITION: Cells, tissues, and organs; Body systems; Importance of water; Nutrition for healthy skin and longevity
15 STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONS OF THE SKIN: Physiology and histology of the skin; Structure and functions of the skin; Hair structure and functions with appendages; Relation to esthetics (nails, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands)
28 SUPERFLUOUS HAIR: Theoretical overview of permanent methods (electrolysis, thermolysis, blend); Temporary methods of hair removal (manual tweezing, depilatory lotion, waxing, strip & non-strip); Bleaching of the hair
3 CHEMISTRY: Chemistry and matter as related to esthetics; Chemical reactions and solutions/elements, Compounds and mixtures/biochemistry; the pH scale
21 CHEMISTRY AS APPLIED TO COSMETICS: Cosmetics; Skin care products; Massage creams and oils, ampoules, scrubs, new technologies; FDA laws governing cosmetics and cosmetic safety
30 ELECTRICITY AND MACHINES: Electricity and its effects on the skin; Galvanic current for iontophoresis or desincrustation; High frequency current; Use of magnifying lamp, wood’s lamp; use of brushing, spray, suction machines; use of vaporizer, pulverizador, hot towel cabinet; Paraffin unit; electric mittens, booties, face mask
235 FACIAL TREATMENTS: Client preparation; Skin analysis and consultation; Skin types; Skin conditions and disorders; Facial procedures; Facial treatments with or without machines; Overview of aromatherapy and manual lymphatic drainage for the face and neck; Product recommendation
50 BODY PROCEDURES (no machines): Body exfoliation (wet and dry); Back treatments; Use of products to enhance skin appearance (seaweed, salt, paraffin, mud, ampoules, creams); Discussion of further training required for advanced body techniques such as aromatherapy, manual lymphatic drainage, water therapies
85 MAKE-UP TECHNIQUES: Color analysis; Morphology of the face; Product knowledge, chemistry, and related composition; Eyebrow contouring; Make-up application; Corrections and contouring; False eyelashes; Further training required for advanced techniques

  CATEGORY DEFINITIONS
100 INFECTION CONTROL: The act of preventing the growth of germs and bacteria or destroying them. Students must perform daily sanitation tasks on implements, equipment and facilities to prevent the spread of disease and bacteria.
200 FACIALS: Skin analysis and care, plain facials, mask facials, facial manipulations, exfoliation, makeup application, hair removal, brow arching and waxing.
40 BODY PROCEDURES: Body exfoliation (wet and dry); Back treatments
40 SUPERFLUOUS HAIR REMOVAL: Tweezing, Depilatory lotions; Waxing; Bleaching of facial hair
10 CLIENT COMMUNICATIONS: Evaluated presentations of student’s ability to interact with the client, build client retention, obtain referrals and upgrade service tickets.
10 BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION: Evaluation of business administration performance including reception desk procedures, inventory, telephone technique, salon business projects, salon field trip reports, etc.
